Déjà vu is one of the rare experiences that is hard to describe and even harder to forget.
You're standing somewhere. In a conversation, in a room, on a street. Suddenly you know this has already happened. Not just that it seems familiar. You know. Yet at the same time reason says this is not possible. Both feelings exist in parallel, which is strange in itself: the mind insists on two things at once, and experiences both as true.
The name was given to it in 1876 by the French philosopher Émile Boirac: déjà vu, "already seen". But the phenomenon is of course older than the name. Saint Augustine, Dickens and Tolstoy all mention it, each with his own explanation, from the transmigration of souls to tired eyes. Studies show that around two-thirds of people experience it at least once in their lifetime, most commonly between the ages of fifteen and twenty-five, becoming rarer with age. That fact alone is interesting: a phenomenon that looks like a glitch is strongest exactly when the brain is at its most flexible.
Interestingly, we don't know precisely what causes déjà vu. Several theories exist, none of them conclusive. And it is exactly this open-endedness that makes it such an interesting object of observation.
Neurological explanations focus on an error in the memory-encoding process. The brain may mistakenly tag new information as already stored, creating a sense of familiarity without any actual prior experience. Some researchers link it to brief disruptions in the hippocampus, the part of the brain that processes memories. Another explanation speaks of dual processing: perception arrives in consciousness along two pathways with a tiny delay between them, and the second arrival feels like a repeat of the first. A fraction of a second of difference, experienced as an eternity of familiarity.
Cognitive psychologist Anne Cleary brought the phenomenon into the lab. Using virtual reality, she led people through spaces that were, in their layout, secretly similar to spaces they had seen before, just "dressed" differently. The result: déjà vu could be triggered. It wasn't the content that felt familiar — it was the pattern. The space, the relationships, the geometry of the moment. The brain recognized the shape, not the memory.
Philosophers approached it differently. Henri Bergson distinguished between "memory of the present" and ordinary memory. He argued that in déjà vu we encounter an awareness of our own perceiving, as if for a moment we notice ourselves noticing. This metacognitive turn is today one of the more interesting theories: déjà vu as a rare moment when consciousness briefly looks back at itself.
There is also a mirror phenomenon, perhaps even stranger: jamais vu, "never seen". A moment when something entirely familiar — a word, a face, your own living room — suddenly feels foreign. If déjà vu labels something new as familiar, jamais vu labels something familiar as new. Together they say something important: the sense of familiarity is not a property of the world. It is something the brain adds to perception. And what gets added can also be added incorrectly.
This fits what we know about memory more broadly: memory is not an archive we open, but a reconstruction assembled anew each time. Déjà vu may be the moment we briefly catch that construction process at work — a quick glimpse backstage at a performance we usually watch without knowing it's a performance at all.
What all these explanations share is that déjà vu is not an ordinary moment. Something in it interrupts the usual flow of experience. And that interruption may be exactly what's worth observing.
What happens in you when déjà vu catches you? Most people notice it and let it pass. Few stop and ask: why did it feel familiar? In what context? What was happening right before it appeared?
We're not looking for a causal explanation. We're looking for a pattern of attention. Déjà vu often occurs in moments of focus, quiet presence, or low cognitive load. It tends to appear more often in new places, when tired, while travelling, in periods when life is changing quickly. This proves nothing — it's an observation worth writing down.
Perhaps the more interesting question isn't "what is déjà vu" but how often it occurs and under what circumstances. Science can measure averages. No one else can measure your pattern, because it only happens to you. This is your own data, and no one can collect it for you.
Note: if déjà vu occurs very frequently, lasts longer than usual, or is accompanied by other unusual sensations, it is worth mentioning to a doctor. In rare cases it can be linked to neurological causes.
